“الحكواتي”
The traditional storyteller of the Arab world — a public narrator who held audiences spellbound in cafés and marketplaces, spinning tales of heroes, lovers, and demons, always ending on a hook so the crowd would return the next day. Rooted in the same tradition that produced A Thousand and One Nights. Used today for anyone who is an exceptionally gifted, captivating narrator who makes any story irresistible.

Used across the Arab world in moments of loss, luck, and everything in between.

Also evokes a world of magic, excess, and the inexhaustible.

“شهرزاد”
Scheherazade — the narrator of A Thousand and One Nights, who survives by telling stories so compelling the king cannot bear to execute her before hearing what happens next. Used today for anyone who keeps an audience completely hooked with an endless supply of captivating stories, always ending on just enough of a hook to demand the next installment.

“بين السطور”
Between the lines — reading the unstated meaning, the subtext beneath the surface of words. Used exactly as in English: to grasp what was implied but carefully not said, to catch the real message underneath the polite or official words. Particularly resonant in Arabic communicative culture, where directness is often softened and meaning is layered.

“ديوان”
A collected anthology of poetry — but also, by extension, the complete record of someone's life and work, their collected output, their legacy. In classical Arabic, a poet's diwan was the definitive edition of everything they created. Saying 'هذا ديوانه' (this is his diwan) means this is his life's work, his comprehensive achievement. Also a place of gathering: historically, the court or council chamber.

“المتنبي”
Al-Mutanabbi — the 10th-century Iraqi poet considered the greatest in the Arabic literary tradition, whose verses are quoted to this day in conversation, political speeches, and social media posts. His name is used as the ultimate standard of poetic and rhetorical excellence. Saying something has 'the quality of Mutanabbi' is the highest possible literary compliment.

“نهاية مفتوحة”
Open ending — a deliberate lack of closure, leaving the reader or viewer to imagine what happens next. Used in literary and film discussions but also in everyday conversations about situations that have no definitive resolution: a relationship left in limbo, a project abandoned mid-way, a conversation that ended without conclusion.
- «الفيلم انتهى بنهاية مفتوحة أزعجت نصف المشاهدين وأسعدت النصف الآخر»

“العبرة بالخواتيم”
The lesson is in the endings — what matters is how something concludes, not how it begins. A classical Arabic saying rooted in religious and literary wisdom, reminding that a brilliant beginning that ends badly counts for little, while a difficult start that resolves well is worth everything. Still widely used to counsel patience and to judge actions by their final outcome.

“قصيدة الغزل”
The love poem — the ghazal is one of the oldest and most refined Arabic poetic forms, devoted to the expression of longing, beauty, and desire. A deeply embedded tradition across Arabic, Persian, and Urdu poetry. To compare someone's praise of another person to 'a ghazal' is a high compliment; the imagery and conventions of the ghazal have saturated everyday Arabic expressions of love and admiration.

Suspense to the very end — keeping the audience gripped until the final page or moment, never releasing the tension prematurely. A quality prized in Arabic storytelling from the classical tradition through to modern television drama, where the serial cliffhanger structure (as in A Thousand and One Nights) is deeply embedded in the culture.
